’13 Reasons Why’ Miles Heizer Enlists as Gay Marine in Netflix’s New Military Drama

Miles Heizer

‘13 Reasons Why’ and ‘Love, Simon’ actor Miles Heizer joins Netflix’s newest military drama ‘The Corps’.

Inspired by US Marine Greg Cope White’s memoir ‘The Pink Marine’, ‘The Corps’ tells the story of underdog gay high school student Cameron Cope (Heizer) who joins the Marine Corps with his straight best friend Ray, hoping that it would turn him into a “real man.”

Heizer himself came out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community when he was 19.

The synopsis continues: “It’s a dangerous move at a time when being gay in the military meant a prison sentence or worse. The two friends plunge into Marine Corps boot camp — amid both literal and metaphorical land mines — joining a platoon of young men on a harrowing journey of transformation.”

Liam Oh plays the role of Ray, described as “the ultimate ride or die best friend for Cameron, as well as the son of a strict Marine father.” His character is always pressured to be the best of himself, but when the boot camp takes a toll on his faith in himself, he then starts to reassess his priorities and trajectory.

Before enlistment, Cameron lives with his mother, Barbara (played by Vera Farmiga), described as a “narcissistic mother” who is “always on the run due to the consequences of her actions.”

British actor Max Parker will play the character Sgt. Sullivan, an elite and decorated Recon Marine, “struggles to keep his own secret” but “sees himself in Cameron.” He then helps Cameron to “prepare him for the same personal war he’ll face beyond boot camp.”

There are no details yet when ‘The Corps’ is expected to get released, although delays are expected with the ongoing WGA strike.
