Korean WLW youth animation ‘The Summer’ (그 여름) ranked first in local cinema, Art Cinema Box Office!

‘The Summer’ is an original story by best-selling author Choi Eun Young and directed by Sundance Film Festival nominee Han Ji Won. Originally a 7-episode animation series that was released back in 2021, the story has garnered immense support that gathered up to 56 million won through crowdfunding which lead to its film release. Additionally, because it was originally a novel, fans and audiences alike were surprised at how well director and animator Han Ji Won managed to convey the story through animation.

The movie celebrates its success, having just recently celebrated 8,000 viewers, which is a huge feat among animated movies shown in the country.

‘The Summer’ is about two teenage girls named ‘Lee Kyung’ and ‘Soo-i’. Lee Kyung, an ordinary student who was minding her own business, was walking along a field when a ball suddenly hit her. Although she was warned by a player, she was still hit and found herself with a nosebleed. The girl who warned her (and kicked the ball) was Soo-i, a high school athlete. Upon seeing the sight, Soo-i made sure that Lee Kyung was okay, and it was that fateful meeting that their innocent summer begins.

As an apology, Soo-i brings strawberry milk to Lee Kyung every day, and because of this, Lee Kyung found herself feeling something to this bright girl. It was then that she realized she might like another girl.
