K-drama fans and the BL community alike were stunned when a BL plot was shown in the drama ‘A Time Called You.’
‘A Time Called You’ is a fantasy K-drama based on the original Taiwanese drama ‘Someday or One Day’. It features different timelines, one of which is a plot that features Tae Ha (played by Rowoon) and Gu Yeon Jun (played by Ahn Hyo Seop). The two are close friends who attend a hagwon (after-school review class) together. Yeon Jun struggled with his feelings for his close friend and wanted to express them to him but to no avail. However, Tae Ha seemed to share the mutual attraction giving non-subtle glances and stares to his best friend. Yeon Jun was practicing his confession on the rooftop but still failed to tell it to him. However, Tae Ha, the braver one, went as far as telling him, “Why do you think I go to this hagwon that is an hour away from where I live when I can attend one that is closer to where I live?”.
The two could have had a great ending together when they held hands as they were cruising down the road, but they unfortunately got into an accident and died together. This was a far cry from the original series, where the similar plot line involved a one-sided gay romance, and the other a homophobic man. Talking about this particular line, Director Kim Jin Won said that he personally felt hurt about Yeon Jun dying since he was not able to “come back”, so he wanted to send Yeon Jun off happily on his death, unlike the original.
