‘What Did You Eat Yesterday?’ Renewed for Season 2; Premieres in October

The long-awaited sequel of ‘What Did You Eat Yesterday?’ is coming and set to premiere in October!

’What Did You Eat Yesterday?’ is a 12-episode drama based on Fumi Yoshinaga’s slice-of-life manga of the same name that was released in 2019. It was followed by 3 special New Year episodes, a movie sequel that was screened in 2021 — and is now renewed for its long-awaited season 2! It stars actors Hidetoshi Nishijima and Seiyo Uchino as Shiro Kakei and Kenji Yabuki, respectively. The drama depicts the story of a lawyer living with his boyfriend, a hairdresser. Shiro Kakei and Kenji Yabuki are now entering their 50s. As they enter this new phase in their lives, a lot of things change, including their environment, body, and mind. However, one thing remains unchanged — their daily life still revolves around delicious meals served at their dinner table.

In case you haven’t watched its first season and its movie sequel, here is an overview.

Shiro Kakei (Hidetoshi Nishijima) is a lawyer who works for a small law firm. He lives with his lover, Kenji Yabuki (Seiyo Uchino), who is a hairdresser. Shiro Kakei’s routine is that after work he buys groceries at a mart which has discounted prices. He has a monthly budget of 25,000 yen ($225) for food that he does not go over. Afterward, he goes home and makes dinner which usually includes rice, soup, and three side dishes. Kenji Yabuki comes home from work just before dinner preparation gets finished. While they eat, the couple talks about pretty much everything. Their time during dinner is precious time for them. One day, when Shiro Kakei and Kenji Yabuki are out in public, Kenji Yabuki’s customer comes up to them and asks “Is he your boyfriend who is a lawyer?” which made Shiro Kakei feel embarrassed. Unlike his boyfriend, he has never told anyone at his work that he is gay.

The first season and its three special episodes are available to stream on Netflix, while the movie sequel is not yet available for international release. The drama won multiple awards at the 101st Television Drama Academy Awards and 16th Confidence Award Drama Prize and is directed by Kazuhito Nakae, Katsumi Nojiri, and Kenji Katagiri. Season 2 will be under the direction of Kazuhito Nakae, Kana Matsumoto, and Daisuke Hirata.
