It’s Series Official: Two Bridgertons are Canonically Queer!

This is for all those who have watched the second part of the romance series ‘Bridgerton’! (And also for the gays who waited for this!)

Do not read unless you’re ready to be spoiled from the second part of ‘Bridgerton’ season 3!

Yes, you have read that right! Two Bridgertons are series-canon queer! In the second part of the most-watched series of the year from the streaming platform, Netflix, the ever-elusive and creative Benedict Bridgerton (played by actor Luke Thompson) is seen kissing a man (and liking it!).

Meanwhile, the newly-wed Francesca Bridgerton-Stirling (played by actor Hannah Dodd), while still married to her husband Lord John Stirling (Victor Alli), is also seen losing her cool once she meets the equally gorgeous Michaela Stirling (played by Masali Baduza). Book fans will know that the character was originally a man named “Michael”, and queer and sapphic fans of the story are rejoicing over the gender swap.

But not all fans are happy about this change, as some people expressed their disappointment that their beloved character “Michael” from the original book “When He Was Wicked” is essentially “written out”. Some fans are also left to wonder what Francesca’s storyline will be when the original book plot made her deal with fertility issues and painful grief.

Meanwhile, fans are also divided with the audience reception of these queer characters, with some saying that the reaction to Benedict’s bisexuality is more “accepted”, as with Francesca, it is met with skepticism, fueling once again the debate of bi-erasure.

Meanwhile, Bridgerton showrunner Jess Brownell admits in an interview that she has been “pitching the Francesca queer story from the beginning”. As a queer woman herself, she said that she related to Francesca the most about feeling different from her family and everyone around her, which made it easy for her to decide on the gender bend. She remains mum, however, on how the story will play out but eases our queer hearts that this sapphic story will not be a “queer tragedy”.

Brownell also confirms that Benedict’s fluidity will not end with him kissing a man in season 3, and they hope to explore more of it in the coming season… whether it’s his season or not.
