Alex Landi and His Queer Character Makes a Comeback in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 20

Queer fans of the highly successful medical series ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ are gonna be happy with the return of the hot and ever-loved LGBTQ+ doctor Nico Kim, which also means Alex Landi is returning to the show!

The queer orthopedic surgeon will make a comeback as the series returns for its 20th season on March 14.

On Instagram, the American actor of Korean-Italian descent posted a selfie in a hospital scrub and lanyard with the caption, “SEASON 20 @greysabc.”

Landi’s character, Dr. Nico Kim, first appeared in season 15 which aired in 2018. He is the first openly gay male surgeon in the series and the first Asian-descent character since Sandra Oh who left the series in 2014.

His storyline was also a major breakthrough for the series with the first same-sex subplot. In the series, Kim had a relationship with his now-ex Dr. Levi Schmitt, played by actor Jake Borelli. The two broke up in season 18 when Kim decided to become a doctor for a professional baseball team. In season 19, Kim was mostly absent, although his departure was referenced as him taking the job for the sports team.

When he joined the cast, Landi spoke about playing an Asian LGBTQ+ character. He said that he was “excited to give everyone a voice.”

“Asians are represented, I think, by less than three percent in entertainment, LGBTQ being less than 1 percent, so for them to combine both of those categories into one role is super special, and I’m so happy that I can take that on,” he said on Beats 1 on Apple Music.

Back in 2019, Landi also weighed in on the issue of straight actors playing gay roles. In the February 2019 issue of Attitude, he said “As an actor, I want to do the best job I can in any role, regardless of my sexuality or the character’s. I just want to do this role proud for the LGBT+ and the Asian communities.”

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 20 will premiere on March 14 on ABC in the US and Australia and on Disney+ in the UK.
