‘And Just Like That’ Star Sara Ramirez Blasts Article “Mocking” Non-binary Character Che Diaz

‘And Just Like That’ star Sara Ramirez has issued a scathing response to an article written about them in June by ‘The Cut’ writer Brock Colyar.

Ramirez took to Instagram on Tuesday, August 22, to issue a scathing response which included two pictures from their photoshoot with the magazine.

Ramirez wrote: “Been thinking long and hard about how to respond to The Hack Job’s article, “written” by a white gen-z non-binary person who asked me serious questions but expected a comedic response, I guess.

Ramirez claimed that the article was an attempt to mock her “thoughtfulness and softness while dismissing a valid existence and real human being in favor of TV show critiques that belonged elsewhere.”

Colyar’s article drew parallelism between Ramirez and the character they play in the show, Che Diaz, suggesting that while Ramirez says they are “not the characters I play, I’m not Che Diaz,” Ramirez wrote in their now deleted Instagram bio “abolicious” and “Mexican Irish non-binary human,” which was the same as the character who was introduced as “queer, nonbinary, and Mexican-Irish diva.”

‘And Just Like That’ drew flaks from viewers when it first aired in 2021, due to the non-binary comedian and podcast co-host Diaz. The character was attacked for being “simplistic and a caricature of being non-binary.”

Ramirez, however, countered that they are not the fictional characters they have played or that they are responsible for their lines on the show.

“I am a human being, an artist, an actor. And we are living in a world that has become increasingly hostile toward anyone who dares to free themselves from the gender binary or disrupt the mainstream,” they said.

The actor ended the post with a few reminders which included saying series creator Michael Patrick King should have been interviewed to address Colyar’s criticisms and proceeded to thank and tag artists involved in the photoshoot for the magazine.
