Queer Film ‘Sebastian’: A Non-Judgemental Take On Sex Work

Sex work is work!

Mikko Makela, the director of the film 2024 film  ‘Sebastian’ which primarily deals with the subject of sex work revealed in an interview with Gay City News that it was important for him to portray sex work without being a caricature of already popular bias against the career.

“It was really important for me to approach the topic of sex work in a completely nonjudgmental way — not bringing any moral question(s) to it. Not thinking that there has to be some kind of trauma behind his decision to do sex work or that it would lead to trauma, either. That was the first important step.”

The film which premiered in December during the 2024 Sundance Film Festival tells the story of Max a magazine writer who went undercover as a sex worker for his piece at the publication. Things get complicated when he gets fully immersed in the industry and he gets attached to a client.

Instead of going the usual route of showing the exploitation and physical dangers of sex work, Makela discussed that he wanted to dive into the mental and emotional struggles such workers experience.

“The dangers are to his emotional life and getting himself very deep into this, for lack of a better word, scheme. There are dangers in his developing feelings of guilt — is he using these people? And of course, in a way, he is. When he has developed a deep and meaningful connection with Nicholas, he has these feelings of guilt and ulterior motives.”

Indeed a personal and intelligent introspection of an individual’s personal, sexual, and emotional journey, ‘Sebastian’ is a film worth watching.

‘Sebastian’ will have a mainstream theatrical release in North America soon.
