Official Teaser for Queer Animated Series ‘Nimona’ Released

Netflix has finally released the official teaser — and the official release date — of its much-awaited queer animated series ‘Nimona’!

Netflix posted across its social media sites the 1-minute-8-seconds-long teaser with the description, “A new hero takes shape.” It will premiere on Netflix on June 30.

‘Nimona’ will have its debut at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival which will run from June 11 to 17.

‘Nimona’ is an animated fantasy film based on the graphic novel by ND Stevenson of the same title. Stevenson is also the creator of ‘She-Ra and the Princess of Power’. Nimona tells the story of, well, Nimona, a shape-shifting girl who was hired to be the sidekick for a reluctant supervillain named Ballister Blackheart, a knight framed for a crime he didn’t commit. Nimona will be voiced by Chloë Grace Moretz, Ballister Blackheart will be voiced by Riz Ahmed, and Eugene Lee Yang will voice Ambrosius Goldenlion.

Disney originally got the rights for ‘Nimona’ in 2015 and production began under Blue Sky Studios. However, when Disney shut the studio down in 2021, the show was canceled. A year after it was halted, Annapurna Pictures picked it up, and Stevenson announced that it will be shown on Netflix instead.

‘Nimona’ is known for its queer-coded and gender-non-conforming characters. It also has a same-sex kiss scene, according to former Blue Sky Studios staffers. Other members of the cast include Frances Conroy, Lorraine Toussaint, RuPaul Charles, Indya Moore, Beck Bennet, Julio Torres, and Sarah Sherman.
