Gay Welsh actor Dino Fetscher, who stars in the science fiction series ‘Foundation’, has expressed his opinion on the issue of actors playing queer roles.
In an interview, Fetscher revealed that he believes queer actors should be taking queer roles wherever possible. “It’s really important for young queer kids to see a queer character and then to find out that [the] actor is queer in real life,” he said. “It’s really empowering. Or for a trans kid to see a trans actor playing a trans role, and then they might be able to look up to them; those things are really powerful.”
While he thinks that directors should make a conscious effort to cast queer actors for queer roles, Fetscher still acknowledges how it may be, at times, inevitable for non-queer actors to take them. He, however, gave an important reminder on how to approach such gigs. “I think for the actors who aren’t queer playing queer roles, there’s certainly a respect that needs to be had there, and an understanding and a sensitivity around it.”
