Nam Yoon Su Addresses Homophobic Comments Against ‘Love In The Big City’

Actor Nam Yoon Su is finally addressing the homophobic comments from fans against his character for his BL series ‘Love In The Big City’.

‘Love In The Big City’ is the TV adaptation of Park Sang Young’s best-selling novel of the same name which follows the Seoul queer scene as narrated by a young gay man in his 20s and 30s.

Speaking to Allure Korea in an interview, the 27-year-old actor addressed the comments he received following the announcement of his casting for the project.

Yoon Su said that accepting the role was not a difficult decision since he had queer friends growing up and has been open-minded from the beginning. He added that he thought of his character as an ordinary person. Yoon Su divulged that after the casting was announced, he received a lot of messages from fans from different nationalities saying thank you.

“Of course, there were some curses, but there were more who said thanks. They even fought in the comments. I was just sitting still,” he added playfully.

When asked if playing a gay lead role could affect his career negatively, the actor replied that he had thought of it but refused to be an actor who thinks about that, claiming he wants to be an actor who does what he wants and creates good works.

Elsewhere in the interview, Yoon Su talked about the severe homophobia towards queer projects in South Korea.

“It’s the same love story with only a difference in gender. I hope you can see it as something ordinary. Not because Go Young is gay, but just as an everyday guy. But the fact that [the show] is released only on OTT, shows that Korean society still has some ways to go,” he said.

‘Love In The Big City’ will have eight episodes and will premiere on October 21 at TVING.
